There's a great Anonymous quote that says "If you want to achieve greatness stop asking for permission." I think that goes well with the old saying it's better to ask for forgiveness that to ask for permission.... now of course there ARE limits on that... but use your common sense to determine when it just makes more sense to go ahead and do something on your own... instead of waiting for permission to do it. If it's something that needs to be done anyway, you could increase your value in the eyes of your boss by taking the initiative to get it done without needing to be asked.
